Brand name Viagra is a prescription medication manufactured by Pfizer Inc. The generic name for the active ingredient in Viagra is sildenafil. Outside of the US, other drug manufacturers make different generic versions of sildenafil with various other names. For example, a version of Viagra Professional , also called Viagra Pro, made by Aurochem Laboratories is sold under the name Aurogra, and a version made by Fortune Health Care is sold under the name Filagra Professional. All of these products have the identical active ingredient, sildenafil.
Viagra Professional is used to treat men who experience problems getting or keeping an erection. This condition is called erectile dysfunction, or ED. ED can happen for a number of different reasons. Viagra Professional is useful for men with the type of ED caused by poor blood flow into the penis.
An erection normally happens when there is an increase in the blood flow into the penis. In ED, the blood vessels that flow into the penis do not supply enough blood for the erection to occur. Blood vessels are surrounded by smooth muscle, and when these muscles contract, they tighten around the blood vessels and makes them narrower. This reduces the amount of blood that can flow into the penis.
These smooth muscles are stimulated to contract when there is an abundance of a substance known as phosphodiesterase-5 enzyme, or PDE5. Viagra Professional is a type of drug called a PDE5 inhibitor. Viagra Professional works by blocking the PDE5 enzyme. This leads to the smooth muscle around the blood vessels relaxing so the blood vessels become wider, allowing a greater blood flow into the penis. This results in an increased ability to get and keep an erection.
Viagra Professional does not make the erection happen on its own. Sexual stimulation is still necessary in order for an erection to occur.
Viagra was originally developed for people with a lung condition called pulmonary arterial hypertension, or PAH. PAH is a lung disease with high blood pressure in the lungs. The Viagra was useful for PAH because it opened up the blood vessels of the lungs and reduced the high blood pressure in the lungs. It was soon discovered that there was a surprise benefit for men using the drug; it improved the ability to have an erection for men who were having ED. Now Viagra is mainly used for ED, and is the most popular drug for ED in the world. The drug is called Revatio when it is used to treat PAH.
Viagra products are also used off-label by some bodybuilders. The Viagra is taken along with steroids. This is done because Viagra helps widen the blood vessels that supply other parts of the body including muscles. Bodybuilders claim that the Viagra helps deliver the steroids and other supplements to their muscles faster, and lead to increased performances in the gym.
Viagra Professional is a chewable form of sildenafil. While Viagra is available in 25 mg, 50 mg, and 100 mg doses, Viagra Professional is available in the higher doses of 50 mg and “double-strength” 100 mg. This chewable form may have a faster action, and the results may last longer. One manufacturer states it can last up to 8 hours, compared to 4 hours for standard Viagra. The dose should be taken 30 minutes before sexual activity is planned, but can be taken up to 4 hours beforehand. It can be taken with or without food, but high fat food and alcohol can delay the onset of the effect. Viagra Professional should be taken only once per day.
Not everyone can use Viagra Professional. There are a number of health conditions that make the use of any PDE5 inhibitor unsafe. Men who have heart problems such as heart disease or heart failure, and men who have kidney or liver disease should not use Viagra Professional without a doctor’s supervision. Other health conditions where a doctor’s supervision is recommended include bleeding disorders, active peptic ulcer disease, and an eye disorder called retinitis pigmentosa. The best way to be sure you are safe to use Viagra Professional with your health conditions is to discuss this with your doctor.
Viagra Professional has the same common side effects as all Viagra products. These include headaches, nasal congestion, dizziness, nausea, flushing, sore muscles, and lower back pain. These side effects are related to the increase in blood flow caused by Viagra Professional. Most common side effects resolve in a few hours. If they are a problem, your doctor may recommend a dose change.
One unusual side effect of Viagra Professional is changes in vision, including blurry vision, or seeing everything tinted blue.
Serious side effects of Viagra Professional include priapism and sudden loss of hearing or vision. Priapism is a medical name for an erection that lasts too long. If you have an erection that lasts for four or more hours, you should get immediate medical help. An erection that lasts this long can possibly cause permanent damage to the tissues of the penis, leading to impotence. If you have a sudden loss of hearing, or a sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes, seek medical help immediately.
Viagra Professional can interact with a number of medications, foods, and even herbal supplements. Never take other PDE5 inhibitors such as Cialis or Levitra at the same time as Viagra Professional. Taking more than one PDE5 inhibitor at a time can lead to severe and life-threatening low blood pressure.
Do not use Viagra Professional if you need nitrates for heart disease. Nitrates include the medications nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate, isosorbide mononitrate, and sodium nitroprusside. There is also a street drug, amyl nitrate or nitrite, also called “Poppers” that is in this group. Combining these medications can lead to severe or fatal low blood pressure.
Other medications that can have interactions with Viagra Professional include Tagamet (cimetidine), Adempas (riociguat), some antibiotics, some antifungals, some HIV medications, other heart medications, blood pressure medications, and antidepressant medications. If you use any prescription medications, the best way to ensure your safety with Viagra Professional is to have a discussion with your doctor.
Grapefruits and grapefruit juice can interact with Viagra Professional. Avoid consuming these fruit products at the same time as Viagra Professional. Also, Viagra Professional can interact with some herbal products such as St. John’s Wort. Make sure your doctor knows about all the over-the-counter medications and nutritional and herbal supplements you may use.
In South Africa, prescription medications such as Viagra are regulated by the Department of Health’s Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA). The TGA has an information sheet about Viagra online at https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/viagra. The TGA strongly recommends that you visit your primary care provider to get a prescription for Viagra Professional, and then have it filled at a reputable store-based pharmacy or an online pharmacy that requires a prescription.
If you have private health insurance, you may be able to have your Viagra Professional prescription covered by your insurance. You will need to consult your individual policy. If you are a veteran, it may be possible to have your Viagra Professional prescription covered by the Dept. of Health’s Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS). Viagra Professional is categorised as Repatriation Pharmaceutical Benefits for Dept. of Veterans Affairs beneficiaries.
An easy internet search will find many internet pharmacies and sites that offer Viagra Professional to men without a prescription. A few examples are viagrastoresa.com, viagrasouthafrica.net. There are some advantages to ordering from an online source. You may feel a greater sense of privacy, prices can be much lower, and your order can be delivered discreetly to your doorstep.
Keep in mind, however, there are some risks associated with online ordering. Viagra is one of the most often counterfeited of drugs worldwide. Some manufacturers may not have reliable amounts of sildenafil in their pills; there can be too much or even none at all. Counterfeits have been found to contain harmful blue dyes, amphetamines, metronidazole (an antibiotic), and even drywall used as filler (which may block the body from absorbing the active ingredient). The best way to be certain you can safely use Viagra Professional and that you purchase a safe product, is to see your doctor for a prescription and fill it at a reputable pharmacy.
